My first attempt at carving
Hi!
I've been snowboarding for a while, and recently discovered videos from James Cherry on carving. I've been practicing for a while, and here is what it looks like for me now:
From the looks of it, I'm far from a nicely looking carve. Any exercises you can recommend for me to improve?
I'm riding Burton Flight Attendant 162 with step-on bindings.
Thanks!
Andrey
@aslushnikov Pretty good, keep practicing!
What I see first in your vid is that your back hand is flailing over the tail of your board. Try to bring it forward over your front toes on heelside and your back toes on toeside. This is the second most common mistake I see aspiring carvers make. A lot of people were taught to ride with a hand over the nose and a hand over the tail. This is a highly ptactical position but it doesn't work for carving.
The back hand position is only a symptom though. I do want you to bring it forward but initiate that rotational movement from the hips and follow through with the shoulders. That is, instead of thinking about bringing the hand forward, think about twisting the hips toward the nose, the hand will follow all by itself.
Another tip: get a better carving board. Something wider and carving specific. The Flight Attendant is an ultralight all mountain board, far from ideal. I mention this because I see you're not getting a lot of board angulation in your turns, but this may be at least partially due to the equipment and the board width (boot overhang will certainly limit any rider's ability to angulate)
The footage is a bit rough, low quality. If you have the original file and it's higher quality then send it to me please, I might include it in a Technical Analysis video for YouTube. Dropbox, wetransfer, or Google Drive to [email protected].
I'm just slaying...
