Hello all!

I'm starting out carving, what would be a good baseline stance width. 153cm board. Reference stance is 20.5 inch or 52 cm. I'm 1.75m and 60kgs approx. Low fat muscular. But def light. I was thinking I'd put it one notch wider so approx 2 inch wider I think? About 4-5 cm. I think it would help me learning. And once getting the hang of it putting it af 20.5 again? Or just experiment? Trying that 22.5(56-57cm) tomorrow. With 30 front, 15 back. Sadly already my last day this year. Next year getting a good carving board!

Board right now(nitro Squash, prolly sucks for carving)waist with 251 cm, running length 1120. The Sidecut is progressive...(Maybe it isn't even possible to carve it well?) 8 front and 7.2 back. A lot of text haha. Next year I'm also gonna teach my gf snowboarding haha. Should I just straight away teach her posi posi lmao. Or duck until she can do turns and stuff haha.

Inseam about 32 inch or 81 cm. If not a little bit lower, can't measure since I'm on holiday. This is based on jeans that are just above ankle so normal wearing.

(This is half copied from YouTube so might be formulated a bit strange)

Kind regards,

Patrick

Squash is really nice board for quick slashing type carves. I have the 159 version and really enjoy it. Of course it's not wide enough for laydowns or such but it's great for more upright carving for sure.

Try to measure from floor to your kneecap and use that as a starting point for the stance width. 30 front, 15 back sounds good. The board could be sized bigger for you if carving is the main application. That 153 length is better suited for trees with your physique. That said, I like to carve even 147 boards every now and then and I'm 182cm tall. Squash in particular has so much nose which really doesn't contribute for carving that much. I bought the 159 to ride trees myself and for my wife to carve with (she's 172cm tall).

In any case Squash won't be a limiting factor when learning to carve up to the point where you start to boot out. Have fun!

Hey @patriickz

Welcome to the forum!

I would say you hit it just right.  My inseam ism 79cm and my preferred stance width this season is 55cm, so 56 or 57 is probably just right for you.  Don't be afraid to bring a screwdriver with you next season and play with it a bit, see where you're most comfortable.

I also recommend adding some lift and can't in the bindings, see my Secrets Part II: The Interface video for more details, and also the video I posted in the binding mod thread here.  I'm training a private client this week and on the second day I added 1/4" of lift on top of 1/4" of cant to the footbeds in his bindings and it was a total game changer for him, enabling more back knee tuck and hip rotation, and making his setup more comfortable overall.

As for the GF, start her off in a symmetric duck stance like 12/-12 for a few days to let her get comfortable and figure out whether she's goofy or regular before you give her your Squash and set it up 27/12.

I'm just slaying...

i made i study, a bit statistical of the japanese carving crew out there. I based my study on toyfilm's video, a famous youtube channel ( https://www.youtube.com/@ToyFilms)

I used all the heights, angles and stances of the riders, i made an average in order to find the ratio between height and stance.

That's the study:

Immagine 2024 03 11 111119

the average front angle 33 back 19 (make your roundings)

the average ratio stance/height  is

image

 ( 1/0,320614409 = 3,119011410 similar to PI greek, cool ! )

so, based on this study, if i was a japanese i'd ride with 57cm stance, because I'm 1,78 cm ( 1,78 * 0,320614409 ~ 57)

What do you think? it's too wide? My tibia is 50-52 cms

Let me know 🙂

Yep. That kneecap method gives pretty short stance though so might be a good idea to add a couple of centimeters especially if you don't go for high binding angles. I use 52cm for my posi-posi hardboot setup and my kneecap (roughly to the center) measures 52cm from the floor. In any case this kind of estimates are just to give you a starting point.

Sounds about right. I would start a bit narrower and a bit later see if the wider stance doesn't compromise the agility. Wider stance is more stable but too wide stance can limit your riding, especially if you don't have added heel lift for the back binding and toe lift for front. Pi is a nice find. 🤓
