James, you have terrific form.

I am a short, heavy 65 year old yet I still have plenty of energy for boarding and now consider my style as Carver.  My time on the slopes is short due to the energy required to strap in, so looking for your professional opinion of Burton step ons as a viable solution, to keep me riding longer.

You appear to have much forward lean on your trailing leg, much like telemark skiers of old (I think that's the term).  If that's true a stiff boot would not be advised.

Hope you don't mind sharing your opinion of the binding and boot selection for your style.

Mark Fawcett has been riding them for years now.  Probably the most important thing, do Burton boots fit your feet?  We are starting to see other options now though.

I'm not a fan of Burton strap bindings with the Re:Flex disk.  It flexes too much.  I'd be looking at other companies.  Union maybe?

You probably don't want an ultra-wide carving board though (with boot underhang), as I'm just not sure they'd have enough drive?  Maybe with stiffer intuition liners, plastic boot stiffeners and straps?  But then why not hard boots?

There are other 'convenience' bindings as well, which use standard boots.  Flow are popular with some carvers.  The Nidecker Supramatic are a bit chunky, but next years FASE bindings aren't quite as bad.

I was randomly recommended this 6 year old review by Ryan Knapton on youtube today. I'd say he gave a positive review

I'm not sure why you say that...

I'm riding the Ride Insano and Flow NX2.  Any stiff boot and rear entry binding will do though.

I rode with Mark last week.  Generally, his style doesn't demand the stiffest setup though I do believe he enjoyed riding in my stance and on my bindings.  He may have said something like "I haven't had a heelside like that since hard boots!".

He did point out how advantageous it is to have the boot fixed to the board directly, through the hooks on the heel of the Step On.  I can see that, there's no possibility of heel lift in the binding.  I'll ride Step Ons when the boot/binding is as stiff as my setup, and as low profile.

I'm just slaying...

I have nothing against Burton, but you rely on the boot fit more in that system than any other.  If they fit you then it might work for you.  For me, buying an Ion boot and X binding is over $1,000 (assuming retail) with no cross-compatibility is a big investment.  One other caveat- you still have to bend down to exit from the Flow's/Supermatic's/Head/Step On's so it doesn't completely eliminate the effort.  It's too bad the Clew's get bad reviews, because the idea of a release on the back of the highback sounds great.

Lots of people extend the lever of their step ons. I did and it works great. I’m running the Ion wides and the X bindings and they work well for what I do and my style. I’m not rocking super wide boards though, 27 waist on my Coiler.

@wild-cherry Watching your videos it appears you have much ankle flex, much like telemarkers have heel lift in the turns.  Being on a board I know you can't be lifting your heel, thus the reason I thought you had softer boot, allowing the ankle flex.  You say stiff boot is the way to go so that's what I will look at.  Thanks
