Any chance we could try one in Québec?

No, sorry.  It shipped today.  I have high expectations from this next one, I don't think we'll need a fourth prototype.

To anyone skeptical: I was tired of the industry board and could treat myself with brand new boards for once. 20 years ago I bought my first, then I've accumulated over 15 used others, never finding or understanding what wasn't working. Since I had a little history with hb, and followed JJA career from a distance, I took the phone (a few times before he answered) and asked him to build me a board for what I do and my ability level. I look like a pro now for the crowd. Never I expected THIS was carving... Buy the board for your weight, don't overshoot you'll miss the train. JJA has dialed in dead center the flex of the board I needed, IT IS the most important factor of a ski or snowboard. The guy spends now more time on sb than hb. I've never experienced so much grip and confidence in the two boards he made for me. Imagine having James collaborating with JJA to get the best out of those two... wow. I've tried a Contra, it sure grips but man does this thing feels dazed and tail grippy. I own a board similar to the one James is currently prototyping. Its has more grip and more lively than the contra. Tested a 163 contra and 164 from JJA for the same rider weight. Lucky enough my friend has the same shape! He is a hb trying sb, fighting to stay up heelside, it was much easier for him with my JJASB. I feel I'll miss out something if I don't try the "working title" Btw, don't think it will cost less to buy directly from JJA directly, also don't think he will disrespect James by copying his receipe. I'm JJA customer, and I won't ask him if he can build an extra one for me...

I’m very tempted to order one, but being one of the cursed with a size 13 boot; if I contact JJA directly will he shape me something similar at a wider size, or is the “working title” as best as I’ll get?

Hey James, I’m really interested in this board it sounds exactly what I’m looking for but I took your advice after your Secrets video and contacted Bruce at Coiler and managed to get myself in line for a Contra. Board hasn’t been started quite yet but I feel obliged to go through with the order as Bruce has been great to deal with and I feel I’ve taken a lot of his time in emails.

I’m an intermediatish level carver & I’ve never had a specific carving board before let a lone a metal board so the Contra will be a huge step up for me I think. I live in Australia and I’m really keen to have a new carving board for this season which runs from June to October.

When will the JJA boards be ready?

Are you planning on doing a run of boards in future seasons?

I will let you know.  I had another request today too from a rider with tiny feet.  The bulk discounted price only works because we're building a mold for these boards, any changes to the shape at all and it's immediately full custom and the price has to go up.  I expect custom widths will cost about an extra $250, but I need to hear that from Jasey directly.

Also, there's a limit to how wide builders can go with the materials we're using.  344mm in the shovel is about the max.  So even if you go full custom with the same sidecut radius it will only be about an extra 4mm in the waist.  If you need a wider board than that, I suggest going to Carl at exegi.ca.  He doesn't use metal but he'll build you a great custom board at almost any width and it's cheaper.

new carving board for this season which runs from June to October.

That's also a "maybe".  Jasey promised 30 boards before the start of next season, the production schedule is up to his discretion.  I will also have a handful of prototypes I can part with when the testing is done too.  Send a message to [email protected] in about a month and I'll let you know what the options are.

Thanks for that fantastic review @wintervince!  Brilliant!

That makes four out of four people who have ridden both the Coiler Contra and the JJA and preferred the JJA!  I can't take any credit, I only gave Jasey some design objectives, he's the one who understood what I was after and knew exactly how to build it!

Video of me and my bro Daniel K riding the protos yesterday should help persuade anyone who is still on the fence!  Coming soon.  Right now I have some very important turns to make and Martina C is waiting!

@wild-cherry

yes, please do let me know.
I’m less concerned with the price and more concerned with getting the proper equipment for myself. I’ve been snowboarding for 35 years and never realized that custom snowboards existed. I’ve always just made it work with what I could find, so even at 293 or whatever you land on it would still be an improvement. Currently on a freecarver 9000 at 274. If I can get something wider then awesome, if the working title is it for now then I’m cool with that too.

a side note, anyone remember the K2 fat bob? Had one of those bad boys back in ‘98.

Okay here's the raw runs from yesterday and the day before.  All boards are JJA, three of the four parts are the newest proto.  The fourth part was a test ride on another JJA.  Dan bought it after one run.

I'm working on some voiceover for this now. Any suggestions?

@chris-h  I should probably mention that there are only a few of these Working Titles left.  There will be a waiting list after the first round but I can't say if or when those people will get boards.  So while I can't guarantee your board before the Aussie season starts, putting a deposit down now with definitely increase your chances of having it on time.

@parker Same for you bro; when they're gone they're gone.  Max waist width on these will be something like 296mm.  The only builders who can go wider than that are Donek and Exegi.  Exegi makes the better board no question, neither one builds with metal (which is partly why they can go wider than 344 in the shovel) and they're both cheaper options, but neither one will ride like a metal board either.  Pick your poison.

I'm launching the "end of season rant" tonight, I expect to sell out this week.

James

yeah last night I said fuck it and put a deposit down on the working title. Not worth the fuss for an extra 4mm. Looking forward to this bad boy!

@wild-cherry I happened to line up behind Daniel this morning and rode with him for a good part of the day.  Conditions were suboptimal with ice turning to slush, but he was slaying it on that 16m JJA board.  It was inspiring to see someone riding 'my' hills like that.

Hell Ya!  All he needed was a new board...

Thanks for the reply’s James I would definitely like to be put on the list for one of the prototypes if any become available. Is it best to email now and then again in a month as a reminder or just in a month is fine?

You are the list @chris-h!

That might work.  Email me with details please about your weight, boot size, carving level and terrain.  I'll see what I have for you.  [email protected]

I would love to get in line for one of these.  I am concerned about the width though- in the flatlands, my 27.0 wide Coiler BXFR is a bit truck-ish.  It holds the line with zero skid, on hard or groomed snow.  29+ seems like a big jump, especially since I am very comfortable at 36F/33R and 28.0 boots.  I can back off a notch without throwing things out of whack, but 2cm is a sizable difference.  Thoughts?

Some custom widths may be available at an extra cost.  We're keeping the costs down on the first batch by building a mold but they all have to be the same size.

Get on the mailing list and keep an eye on this thread.  I'll have more information soon.

Decent chance we'll be able to do a second batch before the nex season starts.  No promises yet.
