I am eyeing up a used carving board and the seller has sent me several pics of the top sheet and base. Top sheet has some scratches which are mostly cosmetic but the edges look good. My question is about the base. It looks like there are "bumps" where the binding mount inserts are located (see pics below).

Is this a red flag?

Lower binding inserts base
Upper binding inserts base

I would pass on that.  Very strange for them to be pushing through the base and the full row too.  I can understand if perhaps incorrect (too long) screws were used but that looks like the full insert pack.  Effectively a manufacturing defect.

It’s odd that it’s that whole row.  It might not be as bad as it looks though (light reflection makes it look obvious, but perhaps it’s not that big of a bump).  A base grind might clean it up a bit.

@kagurasnowsurfer I could only imagine someone had try to hot wax it too hot for too long over those insert packs. I would be worried about base separation in those area from been overheated. you can only stretch plastic and not shrink it. it would require quite a bit of work to redo the base. at least a localized base removal, patch and repair, regrind the whole board. it is your call.
