Wide boots for solid carving
So, I am looking for some new boots. I have read that Driver X
run wide even though they are not necessarily listed as a wide boot
option on the Burton website. I currently ride with an older pair of the Ions
that I picked up online with the older, stiffer liner. They are listed as "Asian
fit" and run wider than the usual Ions. Burton does offer Ion and Photon
in wide foot models, but looking for something a bit more responsive.
K2 Maysis and Ride Lasso appear on searches for wide boots but not sure
about the flex. Anyone else with wide feet? Are there wide boots with some
stiffer/more responsive flex?

Yeah, I have wide feet. Burton Driver X or Ride Insanos work for me, after I break them in anyway...

@wild-cherry How wide are we talking? E? EE? EEE?

Some Burton wide don’t actually have a wider shell, they just have a thinner liner.

@board-doctor That is super interesting!

Not sure, I would have to measure.
Between these two boots (Insano and Driver X) I would say the Burton is wider. It's made of stitched leather too so it stretches somewhat too once it's broken in.

I don’t know about the width, but the height of the Insano is pretty low, it’s not really enough room for my high instep. They feel very low volume to me, but perhaps they’d work for a wide foot if it was flatter?

I have a high instep so the Insano is most likely out...

@kagurasnowsurfer Don’t look at the DC Transcend then!
The Vans Verse are quite good, but they get soft (even with the inserts). Still better than K2 Thraxis though.
The Verse may not be wide, but they have a lot of volume in the toe box. It might be worth a try. The heel is pretty tight & narrow though. They really are a unique fit.

Anybody have any experience with the K2 Maysis?

I am going to take a second look at the Ride Insano. It is not so much that I
have a high arch than that I am bowlegged. I'll try them on and a shop and see
if they work for me.

Custom insoles maybe? I got a set from my local bootfitter. You basically stand on a fancy electronic sandbag and it takes an imprint of your feet which becomes the mold for your insoles.

@wild-cherry The Insano come with an Intuition liner which seems to be a
step up from the stock liners on most boots. I also would like trying BOA
system on them. James, what are your thought on the BOA system on the
Insano vs the Speed Zone Lacing on the Driver X?

I prefer the Boa. It's so much faster in and out, and way easier to adjust after they're on. That's the big draw for me of the Insano, I prefer the fit of the Driver X. Performance is hard to compare because one pair or the other is always worn out/ well broken in.
I'll let you know about durability in February; I only have a few days on my new Insanos. I did have a pair about 15 years ago and they're still usable but I wasn't riding soft boots so hard back then. Lately I've been blowing out Driver Xs in about 50 days. Burton has a great warranty but last spring there were none in stock when I needed them so I bought the new Insanos.
Both of these boots come with crappy cheap liners. Throw them away and find a good ski boot liner with a plastic tongue up the front. Your local bootfitter might be able to hook you up. Here, they toss all the stock liners and sell custom almost every time they sell a ski boot so there's always a pile in the back. Ski boot liners are generally way way higher quality than snowboard boot liners. Aftermarket liners from Intuition and others are also way better than stock snowboard liners; stiffer, more comfortable, longer lasting. The Insano liner is an Intuition but compare it to their aftermarket liners and you'll see what I mean.

Great write-up, James.
Now I need to find a boot-fitter near Tokyo... 😝
